Senses Of Kakadu: Hear, See, Taste, Feel - Kakadu

'Senses of Kakadu - An Outback Feast' was first held in April 2002 and has become an annual event suitable for incentive and conference groups.

Mixing the cultural and geographical importance of the Kakadu National Park World Heritage listing to show the Gagudju people's special link to the country, 'Senses of Kakadu - An Outback Feast' offers visitors' senses a unique collection of art, craft-making and bush foods, along with indigenous music and storytelling.

Festival visitors wander through the oasis-like billabong that forms the central courtyard of the unique Gagudju Crocodile Holiday Inn.

Food tasting during the festival consists of a mixture of traditional foods and modern interpretations of these ingredients. For example, file snakes and Magpie Goose are chief menu items of the local people; visitors are able to taste them as they are meant to be eaten and also with interpretation from the hotel's team of Chefs.

Artwork is for sale from the artists, who create new works throughout the event. Indigenous culture is also interactive, with a pandanus basket-weaving workshop, bush medicine talks and spear-carving lessons.

A celebration dinner is held in the evening around the courtyard pool of Gagudju Crocodile Holiday Inn. Highlights of the evening include storytelling dance-works, created by Northern Territory choreographer Samantha Chalmers, and performances by indigenous vocalist Shellie Morris.

"Senses of Kakadu" CD is a collection of music and songs performed during the festival. It includes the song "Senses of Kakadu", performed and written by Shellie Morris, telling a story of seasonal changes highlighted in the Indigenous Calendar of the Gagudju People of Kakadu National Park. "Senses of Kakadu" CD's are available at Warradjan Cultural Centre, for a copy please phone (08) 8979 0051. The CD is selling at the retail price of $15.00 plus $5.00 for postage and handling.
